A Season of Change

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

In Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8, the Bible explains that there is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens. In the past month, my life has been categorized by a "season of change", making it a very busy one.

The most important change that has happened in the past month would have to be my college graduation. On May 17 I graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources and a minor in Forestry. This major was a broad overview of the College of Agriculture at MSU, so I was able to take animal science classes, plant science classes, forestry classes, and wildlife classes, all of which I have enjoyed. I am very grateful for a positive college experience and the continuous support from my family and friends.

Another big change for me was the selling of my family's home in Springfield. It was the only home I truly remember and we were able to make several memories within its walls. Since that has been our home for over 20 years, my parents felt it was time for a change in scenery, and I agreed. They decided on a condo in Branson overlooking Table Rock Lake to downsize and to say goodbye to yard work once and for all. A "home" is not defined by a physical address or one particular house. It is the people and memories created in that house that truly make it a home. While I will miss driving back to the old house in Springfield like I have done for years, I appreciate the memories it has blessed us with and will have no trouble looking forward to making a "home" and new memories out of a condo.

So What's Next?

Throughout my educational career, I always planned on graduating from college and getting a full-time job. I still had that plan up until the beginning of last semester. If you can remember, last year was the first year for Mule Barn Farms, and it was solely an experiment to see if I could get anything to grow. I documented what I found and put together a simple presentation that I showed a few of my college professors. Throughout speaking with each one, they all posed the same question: "Have you thought about getting a Master's degree?". And the answer was an obvious no at the time, but as time went on, God opened doors that I never would have thought possible, and made continuing my education a no-brainer. So, currently I am beginning a thesis research project that will deal with various gardening methods and work on that throughout this summer and the next. This fall I will start graduate school classes and will be in school two additional years to receive a Master's degree in Plant Science.

In addition to planting and tending to my research project for school, I still have my own 2-acre garden to tend to! It is growing great so far and will be producing fresh veggies in no time. In fact, today I checked and saw a few tiny tomatoes and green beans starting to grow. Some parts are a weedy mess, but some others are nearly weed-free and looking like they will be very productive. Keep checking for updates to see when the veggies will be available!
